TAG | adhd treatment

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children can be treated naturally by using herbal remedies instead of dangerous and expensive mood-altering drugs.  Natural remedies are often better because they do not have the dangerous side effects of pharmaceuticals and they are not habit-forming.  Instead of just covering the symptoms, ADHD natural remedies address the underlying causes.

How ADHD Natural Remedies Work

Many people are concerned about how these natural remedies work.   The answer varies from remedy to remedy, but below is a list of various natural medications and how they treat ADHD.

1.) St. John’s Wort – This herb contains both hypericin and pseudohypericin, which help facilitate increased function of the brains neurotransmitters.  The elevated neurotransmitter function will return brain activity to normal levels, assisting in cognitive abilities.  This is accomplished by blocking the enzymes that deplete serotonin levels in the blood.  Lower levels of serotonin lead to decreased mental functions, such as inability to focus.

2.) Hyoscyamus – This herb is widely considered to be a much safer alternative to the psychoactive drugs that are most commonly prescribed as an ADHD treatment.  The compounds found in hyoscyamus act to balance the release of acetylcholine within the brain.  This is essential for the promotion of cognitive performance.

3.) Passion Flower – This herbal remedy is rich in a bioactive compound known as chrysin, which is has a very therapeutic effect on the nervous system.  It is used to control the emotional outbursts that are common in ADHD patients.

Why Natural Health Works to Treat ADHD

Natural health often endorses dietary adjustments along with using herbal and vitamin supplements.  These dietary adjustments are often designed to remove artificial food additives in conjunction with identifying certain food allergies that may be causing the problem.

Some of these dietary changes include avoiding processed foods in favor of all-natural or organic foods.  Since natural health has become more popular in recent years, this is much easier to do now that most grocery stores offer organic foods.

Herbal Remedies as an ADHD Cure

Ginkgo biloba is an extremely effective herbal remedy for ADHD.  This herb has been found to increase the blood flow to the brain and increase the activity level of neurotransmitters.  If taken over a long enough period of time, the benefits of ginkgo biloba become permanent, even if you stop taking it.

Brahmi is another herb that has been found to be very useful in enhancing brain function, especially when it comes to focusing on a particular subject.  Recent medical research is also suggesting that brahmi can protect the brain from being damaged by the pollutants we put into our bodies everyday.

Other herbal remedies that have been found to help with an ADHD cure are gotu kola, skullcap, and St. John’s wort.  All of these herbs promote proper brain function and will also help with mental ailments like anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia.

adhd naturalDetermining whether or not your child has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is very difficult.  The lists of ADHD symptoms are often too subjective for a concrete diagnosis to be made, even by qualified personnel.  And many other things can cause ADHD-like symptoms to appear.  Anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and depression can all manifest in ways that are easily mistaken for ADHD.  Once a diagnosis of ADHD is made, the next step is to determine what the ADHD treatment should be.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Checklist

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders contains a checklist that is the most commonly used method of diagnosing ADHD.  In order for a diagnosis to be made, a minimum of six different behaviors must be noticed and all must last for at least six months.  A few of these need to have been present before the age of seven and must be the root cause of significant difficulty in the person’s life.

The symptoms are broken down into two lists: inattentiveness and hyperactivity/impulsive behavior.  When attempting to diagnose a person, both lists are checked and cross-referenced.  The lists are:

Inattentiveness:

  • Often fails to pay close attention to details and makes careless mistakes at school or work.
  • Has difficulty in focusing attention on several work or play activities.
  • Does not listen when spoken to directly.
  • Often will not follow instructions and fails to finish assigned tasks and chores.
  • Is highly unorganized.
  • Is reluctant to engage in activities that require heavy use of mental faculties.
  • Often misplaces items, even after they were just used.
  • Easily distracted by noises or visual stimulus.
  • Forgets to do simple daily tasks.

Hyperactivity/Impulsive Behavior

  • Constantly fidgeting and has difficulty sitting still.
  • Climbs items inappropriately, such as bookshelves.
  • Cannot do things or play quietly – must be constantly making noise.
  • Must be constantly on the go.
  • Is extremely talkative.
  • Will attempt to answer before someone has finished asking a question.
  • Will not wait for his or her turn.
  • Habitually butting into to conversations or attempts to take toy/games away from others.

When attempting to determine a diagnosis and if a child needs ADHD treatment, properly trained personnel, such as a medical doctor or psychologist, will take other factors into consideration.  The child’s medical and psychological history will be considered along with physical health, stage of development, and academic performance.  Considering as many different aspects of the child’s life as possible will help prevent a misdiagnosis.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a commonly occurring neurological disorder in children that is typically discovered between the ages of four and seven.  ADHD is characterized by learning difficulties and behavioral problems.  Children with ADHD are often in need of special care and attention.  In this article, we will look more closely at ADHD causes, symptoms and options for ADHD natural remedies.

ADHD Causes

The exact reason this disorder develops is unknown.  However, researchers have found several factors that seem to make one child more susceptible to developing ADHD than others.  These factors are genetic, physical, and social.  The majority of studies conducted into this disorder state that as much as 75% of ADHD has a genetic cause.

Environmental factors that influence the onset of ADHD include tobacco and alcohol use during pregnancy.  Even if the mother does not smoke, exposure to tobacco smoke has been linked to ADHD in children.

The development of the brain is another factor in whether or not a child develops ADHD.  Proper development of the frontal cortex and lobe are important for the ability to focus one’s thoughts and control impulsive behavior.  If this development is delayed, ADHD is often the result.

ADHD Symptoms

The most common symptoms displayed by children with ADHD are being easily distracted, hyperactive behavior, and poor impulse control.  These children find simple assigned tasks difficult to complete because they are quickly bored by the project. Left without a strong controlling influence, these children will jump from one task to another, never completing one.

A poor attention span and absent-mindedness are other ADHD symptoms that are commonly displayed.  Children with ADHD find it exceedingly difficult of perform tasks that require concentration and they have a hard time simply paying attention when someone is speaking to them.  This poor attention span is the source of their forgetfulness.

Children with ADHD will often spend a great deal of time daydreaming, fidgeting, and squirming.  They will also be very talkative and may even display aggressive behavior toward both other children and adults.

ADHD Treatment

ADHD treatment is often a combination of therapy and medication.  And while this course of treatment is often very effective, it can also be difficult to find an exact ADHD treatment plan for every child.  However, there are ADHD natural remedies that are very effective and free from the side effects that accompany many of the medical remedies.

By making certain changes to your child’s diet, you can effectively control his or her ADHD symptoms without subjecting them to the experimental phase of treatment.  Effective natural remedies provide the brain with the nutrients it needs to function properly by improving circulation.  Most people see positive effects within a couple of months of beginning treatment.

adhd remediesIf you have a child that has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), you want to get the best possible treatment. Many doctors prescribe powerful medications to control this disorder. However, these medications are often accompanied by unpredictable and dangerous side effects.

There has also been a rash of diagnosing children with ADHD too rapidly. Just because a child displays a few ADHD symptoms, such as difficulty concentrating and poor impulse control, it does not mean the child has ADHD.

Children with ADHD seem to always be on the go, but with little or no direction. They have difficulty paying attention to the simplest of instructions and thus find it hard to see the most mundane tasks through to proper completion. A certain amount of unruly behavior is natural for children. However, when these symptoms become persistent, it may be time to seek psychiatric care.

If your child exhibits these ADHD symptoms most of the time, you should see a mental health professional for the proper testing and a sound diagnosis. Do not trust the word of school counselors as they are often overzealous in their opinion of a child’s condition.

The Risks of ADHD Medications

Once it has been determined that a child has ADHD, the doctor will often prescribe mood-altering drugs. While these drugs may help a child control ADHD symptoms, they can actually make matters worse. And even if the drugs do work, they may come with unwanted side effects that can completely alter a child’s personality or affect his or her health. Some children become walking science projects as different medications are tried, until one is found that seems to work.

Research is beginning to show a correlation between childhood use of ADHD medications and recreational drug use during adulthood. Researchers are still unclear what, if any, long term effects these drugs may have on children since they alter the chemistry of the brain while it is still developing.

Natural ADHD Treatment

Because of these risks, many parents are beginning to use ADHD natural remedies, instead of subjecting their children to potentially harmful drugs. While these natural remedies do not work as quickly as their pharmaceutical counterparts, they have no harmful side effects. And since there are no worries about natural remedies causing an adverse reaction with the pharmaceutical ones, it is safe to use them to wean your children off the mood-altering drugs.

Many ADHD natural remedies have been found to be extremely effective, especially those that contain tuberculinum, arsen iod, and hyoscyamus. These remedies work by providing the brain with the nutrients it needs to function properly, not by altering the natural chemistry.

If you want to save your child from his or her rampaging mind, but are afraid of the side effects that accompany prescription medications, download our ADHD Natural Remedies Report. Our ADHD remedy report will show you the best ways to ensure your child lives up to his or her potential without risking their health in the process.
